Top Gear count down “17 Special Edition BMW M3s and M4s”28/10/2016
In line with the release of the new BMW M4 Competition Sport pack, Top Gear has taken a look back at 17 special edition versions of the M3s and M4s that have come before, starting in 1988 and ending with the latest 2016 editions! Some of our favourites include:
• The 2003 BMW M3 CSL
In 2003, the third generation M3 was given an update including lighter-weight materials, improved panel design and a better stereo system. Top Gear considers the “E46 M3 CSL [as] one of the greats, with more power from that 3.2-litre straight-six (360bhp), and many lightweight body panels to strip the fat.”
• The 2010 BMW M3 GTS
This special edition model was not only striking because of its bold orange paintwork, but it was also the first M3 to properly introduce a V8 engine in place of the typical six-cylinder engine seen before. The GTS also featured a “carbon fibre roof, titanium exhaust silencers, a lightweight centre console and door linings”, as well as enhanced suspension and “revised traction control”. With only 135 built, this was an extremely limited edition model.
• The 2016 BMW M4 Competition Sport
The most recent in a line of M4 special editions that have been released this year is the BMW M4 Competition Sport. As well as having an impressive “332lb ft of torque”, it is also incredibly fast, going from “0-62mph in [just] four seconds flat” as well as having a top speed of 174mph. The M4 Competition Sport also has aesthetic enhancements to emphasise its sporty personality such as “side mouldings”, “CFRP mirror housings” and “a monster carbon fibre rear wing”.
