What Car? discuss the highly anticipated 2017 BMW 5 Series28/07/2016
What Car? have already fallen for the charms of the BMW 5 Series, naming it their Large Executive Car of the Year as well as praising it with a 5* review, and now they look forward to the next generation which will be available in early 2017.
The new BMW 5 Series will be “available only a saloon [initially], but a Touring estate version will follow shortly afterwards. There will also be a new generation of the 5 Series GT, although that will arrive further down the line.”
The interiors for the new 5 Series appear to be inspired by the 7 Series, with more luxurious materials and the same “iDrive infotainment system” which will be able to be controlled by hand motions as well as touchscreen.
Further technological advancements will show the 5 Series becoming a self-driving, whereby “under the right circumstances and below a certain speed, [the car will] take control of the steering, acceleration and breaking.”
Whilst details on engines for the new series are currently undisclosed, “inside sources tell us that both petrol and diesel engines with four and six cylinders will be used”. As well as this, there will be a plug-in hybrid added to the range, which “will feature a 2.0 litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor, which can drive the car on battery power alone for more than 20 miles”.
The first variety of the 5 Series will be the Saloon on sale at the beginning of 2017 with the Touring shortly following suit; the GT however, will be on sale towards the end of the year.
